The Xian Yun (线韵) series explores rhythm, texture, and movement through clay. In Woven Shadows, geometric carving and contrasting materials combine to create a surface that shifts with light, revealing new details from every angle.
The body is carved with a repeating woven pattern that recalls textile work, bamboo weaving, or architectural screens. Between the carved lines emerge veins of coarse, mineral-rich Duanni, creating warm golden accents against the deeper Zini body. As the teapot is turned in the hand, light catches the raised and recessed surfaces, producing a subtle play of shadow that inspired its name.
Handmade by Tang Zhiming (汤志明), a National Assistant Arts & Crafts Master (国家级助理工艺美术师) and husband of Senior Arts & Crafts Master Shao Junfen (邵俊芬), this piece reflects a contemporary approach to Yixing craftsmanship. Rather than relying on ornament, the design draws its character from proportion, texture, and the dialogue between different clays.
Among the works we encountered during our visit to Yixing, this was one of the pieces that immediately stood out. Its geometric form feels modern, yet the craftsmanship remains deeply rooted in traditional Yixing techniques.
